Splinters Carpentry and Joinery is the brainchild of Mick Derbyshire, Splinters’ Managing Director. After completing his apprenticeship and a City & Guilds qualification in carpentry, Mick joined the army in his early twenties and served in the Royal Corp of Engineers all around the world for ten years. Whilst working in places such as Belize and Germany, he was dreaming about setting up Splinters when he left the army.

So, once demobbed around the turn of the century, he moved to Newquay in Cornwall to be near his family and went about setting up Splinters. On the advice of his accountant he set up a limited company to protect his brand and started working initially for one hotel as their handyman. Gradually work started to trickle in and through word of mouth and a little bit of advertising, the business started to grow.

Today, more than twenty years later, Mick has all the work he can handle and then some. His skills are always in demand from hanging doors to designing, building and fitting a bespoke kitchen or walk-in wardrobe. If it involves wood, Mick can make it.

His other love is turning wood (and/or acrylic) on his lathe. See the shop page for some examples of his work.
